You will be placed into a buddy pair during the Practical application. This is done for safety purposes, and you start learning to work together as a team to handle situation, and over come diversity together.  This class will happen rain or shine, be prepared for the worst elements that Pennsylvania has to offer. If you have attended our land navigation course in the past and want a refresher, there is a returners price of $75.

Gear list-

  • Note taking gear, Must be pen/Pencil for the practical application. 

  • Water source (we will have Jugs of water on site but you will need water source before you're sent out to find the points).

  • Weather appropriate clothing. We highly recommend brining hiking boots or shoes and a change of socks.

  • Whistle. 
  • Lensatic compass, Protractor that reads in 1:50,000 scale, ranger beads.( we can provide supplies if needed).

The objective of this class is to help students understand the following.

  • How to read a map, use and understand a Lensatic Compass, Protractor, Pace Counter & Map Markers.
  • Understanding Maps, marginal information and symbols, what a grid is, scale and distances.
  • We will touch on what is Terrain Association, Navigation in Mountain terrain and compare it to other terrain types in the area the students live in.
  • The class will have 2 hour time period on educational, and classroom work that is wrapped up into a practical application portion of the course.


Student Responsibilities

Students are responsible for bringing their own food and water to the course. While we will have water available on site, please ensure you have adequate provisions to stay nourished and hydrated throughout the training.
